I love how Elise layers clothes. She puts stuff together that I would never think of! It was so fun shopping for her Christmas gifts. I can't describe her personal style but I know when I've found an item she would love.

Side note: The family dance party was killer this year. We had a whole sound system set up and a black light and sweet tunes. Best Christmas Eve EVER!

a bow tie and a dance party

Dec 21, 2010

Selina made me this bow tie hair clip last year just after I had my daughter.... It has been such a fun and useful accessory.
Shirt: Katherine's closet... literally.
Cardi: Elise's closet
Skirt: Thrifted 4.00
Tights: Target 3.00
Classic black pumps: Payless 15.00 and comfortable too!

I love traditions for the holidays, I am so excited to start traditions with my little girl. Our house was a little crazy growing up and we didn't have many set traditions, the only one that really stuck (and not on purpose) has been dancing like idiots to Christmas music.
Just to get a little insight on our family and dancing.... Recently my brothers friend came over and we were all in his room blaring earth wind and fire having doing a synchronized ridiculous dance move all together....His friend just joined in... THAT is how often these dance parties occur. They are NEVER planned either. You can say it...we are weird.

What are your most memorable traditions?

"Save the Sleeves!!!"

Nov 5, 2010

i am loving sleeves with personality right now... i always feel a bit cuter with something going on in the shoulder area...

these lovely satin eggplant poofy sleeves came from an enormous dress i bought for $3 at TJ Max. i thought i could layer it and belt it... but it never worked
SO..
i got out my seam ripper and ripped out those beautiful sleeves and added them to a charcoal grey Tee that i bought for $1 at the thrift store. i cut the neck hole so it would be more feminine and took it in at the sides..
the sleeves are supposed to be poofy so i gathered them till they fit the arm hole making them a bit poofier (is that a word... it is now)

i cut the rest of my dress and made it into an elastic waist skirt...
 totally easy and quick

come on girls... selvage those sleeves!

97 Cent dress refashion

Oct 25, 2010

Cardi: Forever21 Thrifted 4.00
Ruffle blouse: Walmart 8.00
Shoes: Payless 15.00
Leather skinny belt: Thrifted 1.50

So I know you are all thinking, "Hey Sophie, I would really love to see another elastic waist band skirt"...
okay, maybe not, but  I do love this new addition to my wardrobe.

Call me gluttonous, but after I found all that great stuff at Old Navy for literally NOTHING, I went back the next day.  I was curious if I missed anything fantastic and since my last trip cost me nothing the 2nd trip was worth it to me.  I walked away with 4 pairs of leggings and a pair of jeans and I maybe spent 7.00.
I also grabbed this over sized dress that I had my eye on the day before...
Yikes! It was kind of big.
(I love my little peanut in the background:)
A little snip snip and now I love it!
Well worth the .97 cents I paid for it!

Now what should I make with the fabric left over from the top?

Blue sundress transformation

Oct 12, 2010

Ready for Fall!

Cardi:  H&M, Plato's closet 7 dollars
Blue Dress: XL from my "Elated" Old Navy Sale post, 97 CENTS!
Belt: Old Navy 47 CENTS!
Shoes: From my "Elated" Old Navy Sale post, 47 CENTS!
Outfit Total Price: About 9.00!!

Here is the dress before: It is inside out and the sides are pinned but you get the idea!
I bought it in an Extra Large cause I loved the neck line and for goodness sake it was 97 cents.
So first you turn your dress inside out and pin in the sides where you want it to fit.

Next I lined up pins down the side to create an "A" line down to the bottom.

Next I just sewed right down the sides. I cut off the remaining fabric and turned it right side out.
Okay so maybe I had to try this step twice because my A-line stitch down the side wasn't so straight and I had room for hips in the middle of my thighs!

Last, I put an insert of blue fabric in (made of my scrap materiel's).
All done. Throw a cardigan on and you've got a super cute/cheap/modest outfit!
XOXO~Soph

elated

Sep 27, 2010

I love a deal. I mean I really love a deal.
Today I got a DEAL.

I returned a shirt I got at Old Navy,
 It was 10.50.

In return I got all this...
and $1.82 back.
5 dresses and 8 pairs of shoes. Dresses: .97 cents each. Shoes: .47 cents each.
I was DYING!!!
I mean I practically just stole clothes and shoes. This was a STEAL!
I am all stocked up for next summer and for the summer after that AND I am giving shoes to all my sisters and my mom.
These were my favorite!

So here's how it went down. Lady in front of me in line flies by me and says "The cashier says that all these dresses are .97 cents!"  I quickly follow her to the dresses. We sit there with 2 other women looking through dresses in AWE of the deal... we are instantly friends.
I get back in line. A girl who I had spoken to earlier about sandals walks up to me with her arms full. "You better go back to the sandals they are all .47 cents!" Another new friend. So, I tell my new dress friend about what my new shoe friend just said and we shuffle our carts over to the shoes. I am closest to the shoes and I ask my new friend her shoe size so I can start throwing shoes back to her.

Right now I have the opposite of buyers remorse.....I have buyers joy.

So I guess the sale was an hourly sale and later that day the shoes and dresses went up to 1.97 but still... that is a GREAT deal.

I got some dresses that were shorter summer dresses in a size large so I can take them in and make them knee length.
Here is the neck of the pretty blue dress I am so excited to work with.
Happy bargain hunting!
xoxo~

Two 1.00 T-shirts never looked so good

Aug 18, 2010

T-Shirt #1
First, I cut out around the V-neck of the shirt, chopped the sleeves shorter and took in the sides to make the shape more feminine.
(It was a men's small)

T-Shirt #2
This was a crew neck men's XL. I used it to cut 65 double layered 1-1.5 inch circles. (Not perfect circles)

Then, I doubled up the circles ant pinned them on the T-shirt #1 where I wanted them.

Last, I sewed them all on using a zig zag stitch on my sewing machine.
This part took the longest.
I had been searching for something like this and was disappointed not to find it anywhere that wasn't ridiculously expensive.  So what do you do when you can't find that missing link to your wardrobe? Make it your self! I love rocking this shirt with a pencil skirt or even jeans... or shorts or...

Sister #2 Weekend Wear

Aug 13, 2010

Our Blog friend Meet Virginia always does a post each week on what she wore that weekend and gives us the insight on how she achieves super cute style for less. She is hosting a linky party for weekend wear, so take pictures of your outfits and link up!!

Here are my outfits for this weekend!

What I'll wear to church on Sunday:
Black and grey embellished shirt from GAP: 7.00 at Plato's Closet
Yellow Belt: 0.49 at Old Navy (Clearance)
Fabulous navy pencil skirt: It is my moms from I think the late 80's
Teel shoes:  5.00 Thrifted
Brass rose earrings: 4.00 at BP in Nordstrom

Saturday wear:

Tan Blazer: 5.00 Thrifted from the little boy's section
Teel shirt: 6.00 Urban outfitters (clearance)
Flower Necklace: Made by Sister #1 after I had Eden. (Tutorial to come, of course)
Bracelet: 1.00 at a random Herbal Store
Set of 7 gold rings: 3.50 from H&M
Black stretchy skinny Levi's (rolled up): 6.00 at Kohls
My so favorite leather Oxfords: 5.00 Thrifted

Okay don't hate me for wearing stripes on stripes ... I was feeling it. Mind you that just when we thought denim on denim would be dead and gone I am seeing it everywhere!

My fashion tips:

  • Don't match too much. I remember being so bound to matching: earrings to necklace/belt to shoes not to mention color dilemmas. It is quite liberating to not match at all.

  • Dress to flatter your body type.  Last year I gained 50 lbs with the pregnancy of my daughter Eden...Let me tell you it did not instantly melt away the way I hoped.  I was used to being pretty small and I had to learn how to dress my new figure. The cool thing is before I had my baby I had a cute shape but, like most women, I found flaws to gripe about. NOTHING has made me love my body more than going through pregnancy and the awkward stages afterward. I developed a new found respect and love for my body and the wonderful creation that it is.  I want to show it love no matter where I fall between size 2 and size 10.

  • Only buy things you love. It is so much easier to throw outfits together that way! Don't just jump at every deal you see. If it's 3 dollars and you won't really wear it, don't buy it.
